Harlem-Roscoe firefighters practiced their skills with an intentional house burn of a vacant house on Free Church Road in Boone County on the morning of Sunday, Dec. 18, 2022. Recruits and cadets had had many drill night trainings on topics such as search and rescue, ventilation, forcible entry, hose tactics, and fire suppression. But this exercise gave them experience with a real fire, without the high stakes. Then firefighters posed for pictures in front of the burning home - something they normally can't do.
A previous version of this story incorrectly identified two photos as outgoing chief Donald Shoevlin and incoming chief Patrick Trollop. They are actually both photos of HRFD's training officer, Division Chief Tom Aaker, one from the front and one from the back. We regret the error.
