Former Hononegah Indian wrestler Tony Cassioppi and the Iowa Hawkeye wrestling team has started off the 2022-2023 team campaign in dominating fashion. They improved to 4-0 after cruising to a 42-3 win over California Baptist on Sunday. Tony, wrestling at 285 lbs, pinned his opponent at the 2:13 mark of the opening period last Sunday.

Tuesday night, at the 2022 NWCA All-Star Classic in Austin, Texas, the Roscoe native wrestled again at 285 lbs against his Big Ten foe Greg Kerkvliet (Penn State). The match was one of fifteen bouts, which included four women’s bouts. Coming into the match, Cassioppi had a 3-0 record against Kerkvliet in their careers. Both finished inside the top 10 at the NCAAs in the last few seasons, with Tony finishing #3 last year.

In the match last night, Kerkvliet jumped out to a 5-1 lead midway through the 2nd period with a pair of takedowns, but Tony Cassioppi closed the gap to 5-3 with a late reversal in the 2nd period.

Cassioppi chose the down position to start the 3rd and his escape from the bottom cut the deficit to 5-4, but Kerkvliet followed with a takedown and his riding time point made it an 8-5 final.
