Roscoe native Tony Cassioppi competing in world championships for Team USA

UPDATE:Tony did it! On Sunday, he earned a bronze medal by pinning Kai Shutto in 33 seconds. Then Ukraine’s Yurii Idzinskyi defaulted because of injury.

On Saturday, Tony had defeated Israel's Lior Altshuler in the first round in a 10-0 technical fall victory, then lost his quarterfinal match against Solomon Manashvili of Georgia. The Hononegah grad had another chance for a bronze medal through a repechage match on Sunday.


Former Hononegah Indian wrestler Tony Cassioppi is competing on Saturday, October 22 and October 23 at the UWW U23 World Championships in Pontevedra, Spain. Tony is representing the United States men’s freestyle team at 125 kg.

He opens the tournament on October 22 at 3:30 a.m. (CT) with qualification rounds, where he will face Israel’s Llor Altshuler in his opening match. The semifinals are at 9:45 a.m. The repechage begins Sunday, October 23 at 9 a.m. and the men’s freestyle finals are Sunday at 11 a.m.

Tony Cassioppi (125 kg) won the gold medal for Team USA at the 2021 U23 World Championships after pinning Azamat Khosonov of Greece in finals. Cassioppi, who wrestles for the University of Iowa, went 4-0 in the tournament, posting two wins via fall.
