On Tuesday, December 27, 2022, when Rockton firefighters arrived at located shortly after 6:50 a.m., they found a single heavily damaged vehicle, a Chevy Tahoe, that had struck a tree in the 6600 block of Shirland Road. The 38-year old driver was inside and unresponsive.
It took an hour for Rockton emergency personnel to free the man from the vehicle. Winnebago County Sheriff’s Deputies arrived about 7:00 a.m. Rockton Fire Department personnel pronounced the man deceased. He was later identified as Nathan Shockley of Shirland.
The crash is being investigated by the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office and the Coroner's Office. WIFR reports, "Officials tell 23 News they believe the crash happened around 5:30 a.m. but the vehicle wasn’t found until hours later."
