The Rockton Fire Protection District says at least eight vehicles were involved in a snowy, windy collision in the 8800 block of North Main Road/IL Route 2 south of Rockton at about 4 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 23, 2022. "Thankfully no one was seriously injured," they said on Facebook. They took three people to a local hospital with the help of ambulances from Northwest Rescue

The same drifting snow that caused the collisions made it dangerous for first responders: "near white out conditions" with temperatures below zero. The National Weather Service predicted winds up to 50 mph and wind chills as low as 30 degrees below zero.

In its report, WIFR counted "more than 9 cars" that had piled up by 4:30 p.m. According to WIFR, the Winnebago County Sheriff's Office closed North Main between Latham and Gleasman roads for several hours but reopened it by 7:36 p.m. The accident remains under investigation.
