Veterans Day honors the military veterans who served honorably in the United States Armed Forces. It was originally called Armistice Day because the armistice with Germany took effect at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, officially ending World War I. It was renamed Veterans Day in 1954.

Veterans are traditionally given free meals by the Roscoe VFW, while others can enjoy turkey dinners at a reasonable price. The Old Stone Church in Rockton is also serving turkey dinners for everyone, also at a reasonable price, which can be reserved by calling 815-624-6212.

By federal law, two minutes of silence should be observed at 1:11 p.m. Central Standard Time "in honor of the service and sacrifice of veterans throughout the history of the Nation."

This is a federal holiday. Roscoe Village Hall and the Secretary of State Express Driver's License facility will both be closed  in observance of Veterans Day.
