12 -5 p.m.  $55 per person. Here is an opportunity to “make and take” your own period pocketbook, using patterns from a dated 1856 pocketbook available for review. Leather tri-fold pocketbooks with multiple compartments were widely used by both women and men during the early 19th Century to carry bills, business papers, letters, money, and related items. Instructor Norman Walzer has done leatherwork and shoe/boot making exhibitions for 50 years or more and was tutored at Old Sturbridge Village and Colonial Williamsburg. He also has an assortment of dated 19th Century pocketbooks and pre-Civil War tools. Leather, patterns, awls, needles, thread, and a finish coat will be provided along with guidance and assistance from the instructor during the process. Activities involve mainly hand sewing which requires manual dexterity and good eyesight. Prior experience in working with leather is not necessary. Participants should schedule up to 5 hours to complete the project or plan to finish it later. The pocketbook will be well-suited for participation in reenactments and other historic activities.
