It was the quintessential, crisp fall evening for football on the lightning-fast turf of Kelsey Field. The stage was set, the bleachers were packed with faithful supporters, and postseason energy crackled in the autumn air.

For the first half of Friday night’s IHSA playoff showdown between Hononegah and Willowbrook, fans were treated to a classic, white-knuckle defensive slugfest.

The game’s opening pulse actually saw Hononegah strike with a breathtaking long touchdown pass and catch, sending the home crowd into a frenzy—only to have the explosive play heartbreakingly called back due to a penalty. From there, both defenses dug their cleats into the turf. Neither squad could quite get an offensive rhythm going as big hits echoed across the field. Willowbrook managed to scratch together the game’s first points with an 8:26 mark in the first quarter when Ben Swanson drilled a 33-yard field goal, putting the visitors up 3–0.

The defensive stalemate held firm until just 53 seconds remained in the first half. That’s when Hononegah’s offense finally broke through: junior quarterback Colton Banker floated a brilliant completion to receiver Giovanni Zepeda, who turned it into a 21-yard touchdown strike to electrify the home sideline. Though the kick missed, the Indians grabbed a 6–3 edge heading into the locker room.

The Winds of Change Sweep Kelsey Field

If the first half belonged to trench warfare, the second half belonged to a full-scale purple-and-gold avalanche.

As head coach Brian Zimmerman noted after the game, his squad "Came out a bit nervous and anxious early on, but once they settled down, you could feel the momentum tilt", entirely in Hononegah's favor. The Indians steadily wore down a gritty Willowbrook team that had several two-way players.

In the third quarter, Nolan Meadors extended the lead with a booming 39-yard field goal, making it 9–3. Then came the fourth-quarter floodgates.

Hononegah poured on 23 points in a dominant closing stanza. Quarterback Dominic Cacciatore punched in a 1-yard touchdown run early in the fourth, followed shortly after by a 1-yard scoring plunge from workhorse Jacob Duval—who punished the Warriors all night with 94 bruising yards on 20 carries. Cacciatore added the exclamation point with a shifty 5-yard TD run late in the game, capping off a stellar night where the Indians outgained Willowbrook 280 total yards to 154 and completely controlled the line of scrimmage.

Defensive Dominance Led by Senior Trench-Wreckers

While the offense exploded late, Hononegah’s defense was airtight from whistle to whistle, racking up a staggering 5 sacks and 7 tackles for loss while intercepting two passes.

Senior defensive standout Logan Wilson put on a clinic, anchoring a monster defensive effort that baffled the Warriors' passing attack.

"You know, if one of us is taking on more than we should... I didn't expect a two-sack game considering I had two sacks in the regular season. But I mean it happened and we all came out on top and it was beautiful."

Reflecting on avenging a bitter memory from years prior, Wilson added: "We're looking at them on film. They were a good team. We're a good team this year. Maybe they did skunk us like a couple, like two years ago and we've been thinking about that all week, but we definitely had an opportunity and we took it."

Coach Zimmerman was quick to praise his unit's unrelenting pressure, highlighting players like defensive back Colton Banker (who notched a sack and three pass breakups) and defensive leader Derrick Capitosti, alongside a secondary that blanketed Willowbrook’s receivers.

"I was hoping defense play well and we did come out," Zimmerman said. "We made some tremendous plays, a couple of hits. Banker number 12 came up and hit some guys harder than I've seen all season. I thought Logan Wilson did an outstanding job. He had a couple of sacks. Great pressure. Our secondary played really, really well against a team that likes to throw the ball."

Looking Ahead to Fenwick

With the 38–3 final score firmly in the books and health looking solid heading into Saturday morning's film and rollout sessions, the Indians are wasting no time looking back. The focus was entirely on surviving Willowbrook first—and now, the horizon brings the next massive challenge.
