George Washington, born February 22, 1732 (in the Gregorian calendar), served as commander of the Continental Army in the American Revolutionary War, moderated the Constitutional Convention of 1787, and served two terms as the United States' first president before imposing term limits on himself. Washington owned or managed hundreds of slaves, but privately said he did so "very repugnantly to my own feelings." In his will, he ordered that his remaining slaves be freed upon his wife's death. The Revolutionary War was lauded worldwide as the first anti-colonial revolution that succeeded.
