DBN Foundation donates $10,000 to HCHS music department and boys and girls golf
The HCHS Board heard about Homecoming plans and approved several purchases.
During the HCHS regular school board meeting, Sept. 15, 2021, Matt Weldon, Paul Jentz and Matt Strand, members of the DBN Foundation, presented a $5,000 check specifically for the school’s music department in honor of Patrick Insko, and an additional $5,000 to be split equally between the boys and girls golf teams, in honor of Craig Weaver.
The DBN Foundation was created by members of the Hononegah Community High School class of 1991, who explain, "DBN stands for Don’t Be Next, as in don’t be next to pass away. Sharp wit, extremely dry and dark humor are what the founding members and our fallen brothers were renowned for and as a salute to past and future passings, we chose this as the name."
Walmart donated a $1,000 Community Grant to HCHS for the Career and Technical Education (CTE) department.
Staff members Mr. Lawyer, Mrs. Chambers, Mrs. Bohn and Mrs. Christoff were recognized for their service in planning memorable events for students in the middle of the pandemic during the 2020-2021 school year.
Math Department staff Becky Reynolds, Matt Simpson and Maureen Schnaper explained the revamped curriculum that was put in place this summer.
Student Council Representative Madison Bunger reported on preparations for Homecoming, Oct 2. Students will be painting downtown windows on Saturday, Sept, 26. Pep assembly will be held Sept. 30.
There will be a parade through Main Street to the high school on Friday, Oct. 1. No floats this year - instead, students will carry banners.
New this year, the Special Education Department will present their own homecoming prince and princess.
On Saturday, Oct. 2, the Homecoming Dance will be held in a large tent in the parking area on the HCHS campus.
The Board approved posting the 2021-22 Administrator and Teacher Salary and Benefits Report on the school website.
Associate Principal Kathy Eckmann gave a Building Administration report: Enrollment rate is now at 1,900 students for the 2021-2022 school year. Eckmann said 74 new students have enrolled: 21 freshmen, 18 sophomores, 16 juniors and 19 seniors. The graduation rate is at 89.63 percent.
Several proposals and contracts were approved during the New Business portion of the meeting:
- Nelson Carlson Mechanical Contractors to remove and replace the boiler in the north boiler room - $52, 715.00
- Alpha Control and Service for north boiler room project - $7,250.00
- Ceroni Piping Co. for boiler removal and replacement of south boiler room - $228,175.00.
- Alpha Control and Service for south boiler room project - $12,000.00
- Bryden Motors for the purchase of a 2020-2021 Dodge Ram 2500 truck, including plow and salt spreader - $44,701.07.
- Ringland-Johnson for maintenance building overhead door proposal - $24,959.00.
- Nelson Carlson Mechanical Contractors for installation of two furnaces and a single stage condensing unit for the north AP - $16,918.00, and for the south AP - $16,918.00.
The Board also approved the stipulation for the 2020 property tax appeal filed by Sunil AP Federal II LLC
Members of the Rockton Township Historical Society have contacted Board members about commissioning a large bronze statue of Hononegah to be placed on the school grounds. Hononegah was the wife of Stephen Mack, the founder of Macktown Settlement. She was a member of the Potawatomie tribe, and HCHS’s namesake.
The proposal will be further discussed at the October Board meeting.
