Hononegah math team, headed for state competition

Hononegah Community High School spent Monday morning, Feb. 26, 2024, with an assembly to celebrate the many achievements their winter sports have won. Principal Chad Dougherty got the students excited with his usual purple vs. gold cheering competition, then began bringing teams forward to congratulate them.

The wrestling team won both the NIC-10 Championship and the Regional Championship, overall finishing top 8 in class 3A. Individually, many wrestlers competed in state, with TJ Silva (junior) placing second, Rocco Cassioppi (freshman) placing second, Bruno Cassioppi (freshman) placing third, and Brody Sendele (freshman) placing third. Angelina Cassioppi (junior) also competed in state, going three for three and winning her third state title.

Girls bowling competed in state and finished seventh with Emilee Mullranin (junior) placing 12th and Cassidy Davenport (senior) placing 17th.

Boys varsity swim won the NIC-10 Championship for the 14th year in a row, and senior Owen West qualified for state.

Boys basketball became regional champions after a challenging season, but lost the sectional semifinals in a close game against McHenry.

Girls basketball won the NIC-10 championship and the regional championship, becoming sectional finalists. The girls went undefeated in conference, continuing their 18-0 record. Coach Jason Brunke also earned his 100th win this season.

The math team qualified for ICTM State, having an impressive year so far with many top performing teams.

The assembly ended with all the students singing the school song, which can now be seen on the wall of the field house for all to read.
