A Golden Finish, A New Beginning
Roanoke is going to capitalize on his incredible upside.
Four years ago, Gael Bronson stepped onto the Hononegah pool deck with almost no competitive swimming experience. Recently, surrounded by coaches, family, and friends, the Indians’ team captain signed his commitment to swim for Roanoke College in Virginia, securing a prestigious four-year, full-tuition scholarship.
Gael’s meteoric rise reached its pinnacle at the IHSA Sectional Meet. Anchoring the 200-meter relay, the explosive sprint specialist clocked a blistering 21.96 seconds. In a thrilling fight to the finish, Gael outswam the anchor from first-place DeKalb. Though the relay team was heartbreakingly edged out of state qualification by a mere tenth of a second, Gael’s personal best cemented his place in Hononegah lore.

Beyond the pool, Hononegah’s athletic director celebrated Gael as a standout marching band member and aspiring entrepreneur, confident he will thrive in Virginia's beautiful country.
As he prepares for the next level, Gael remains deeply grateful to Roanoke’s Coach Brett Fonder, his push-each-other teammates, and his family, who cheered just as loud whether he was in the first heat or the final. Ultimately, Gael hopes his improbable journey inspires swimmers across the Nic-10 to chase their own collegiate dreams.
