2025 Hononegah Senior Soccer Spotlight: Cameron Nelson
Senior Cameron Nelson is the foundation of the defense and a leader for all of his teammates.

Among Hononegah’s great team as a whole, there is one player who stands out from the rest—senior Cameron Nelson. Cam is the foundation of the defense and a leader for all of his teammates. In just a few games, Cam proved himself to be one of the most consistent and reliable players. No matter who he’s playing with, Cam is always there to protect the goal. His teammates can see this, too, which is why he was voted the third team captain before the season started.

Coach Mike Fasula commented that Cam has “shown his leadership and ability to push the players to be their best selves,” which can be seen in every game.
Soccer has been a constant in Cam’s life from the very start. Both of Cam’s parents played soccer, and Cam even watched his dad play when he was young. Unlike most of his teammates who’ve played many positions throughout their soccer careers, Cam has only ever been a defender. For Cam, both his parents played defense, so it’s been “in the family,” just continuing their tradition.
When asked about who his greatest influence and role model is, Cam said, without a doubt, that it’s his father. Cam’s comment was, “he’s always there talking to me and helping me.” Being able to watch his dad and learn from him “developed [Cam] as a player, on and off the field.” It is clear that Cam is able to give the game his all because he has the full support of his family behind him.

Although Harlem beat Hononegah 2-1, Cam was able to shut down their #1 striker repeatedly. From Coach Fasula’s perspective, it is the “drive, motivation, and his ability to direct the field” that makes Cam such a successful defender.
When it comes to the team as a whole, Cam echoed many of his teammates comments on the “good communication” and team chemistry “this early in the year” which has been supporting them in their successes so far. Communication, especially, is a strong suit for Cam individually and as a team captain. Throughout the season and most recently at the Body Armour Showdown, Cam has taken charge of the game and led the team in effective communication on the field.

Looking back on his time as a Hononegah soccer player, Cam’s favorite memory was winning the JV conference his freshman year with a “last-second goal [scored] by a defender.” His advice to his teammates and future high school players is that you have to “take it all in” because the four years you get go by fast.
Overall, Cameron Nelson is a vital part of Hononegah’s soccer program and a major contributor to their past and future successes. In Coach Fasula’s words, we can all “see his future being very bright in whatever he chooses to do after high school.”
